Avianca reaffirms its role as a strategic partner to Medellín and Antioquia, a region in Colombia where the airline has maintained a presence for more than 90 years. As part of this commitment, the company operates year-round, supporting economic and social development by connecting Medellín with more than 25 domestic and international destinations.
In 2025, the airline reached a historic milestone, carrying more than 7 million passengers on more than 43,000 flights to and from the city. This momentum continued during the first half of 2026, when Avianca transported more than 3 million passengers on more than 22,000 flights to and from Medellín.
Operations during the Flower Festival
As the official sponsor of the Flower Festival, Avianca announced that it will operate more than 400 weekly flights to Medellín throughout August to meet strong demand from travelers arriving to experience one of the country’s most iconic celebrations.
“The Flower Festival, one of Colombia’s most representative cultural expressions, is a celebration that reflects the identity and traditions of Antioquia. We are deeply proud of the history we have built alongside Medellín and the region for more than 90 years. Supporting this celebration also reaffirms our commitment to regional development and to connecting thousands of travelers from Colombia and around the world with a truly unique experience. Throughout August, we will offer more than 400 weekly flights to Medellín, strengthening connectivity, supporting tourism and contributing to the economic vitality of a region that has played a key role in our company’s history,” said Ángela María Orozco, Avianca’s senior vice president of corporate affairs.
Avianca Cargo: Driving Antioquia’s Flower Industry
The company’s commitment to the region is also reflected in its cargo operations, a key driver of competitiveness for the flower industry, which is celebrated each year as part of the festival. Flowers account for approximately 90% of air exports departing José María Córdova International Airport. In this context, Avianca Cargo holds a 60% share of Medellín’s air export market, making it the leading airline by available cargo capacity in Antioquia’s capital and a key logistics partner.
So far in 2026, Avianca Cargo has exported more than 82,000 tons of flowers from Colombia, including nearly 27,000 tons from Medellín to key markets across the Americas and Europe, supported by its weekly frequencies to Miami and Madrid. The airline also holds IATA’s CEIV Fresh certification and has specialized infrastructure, including cold-storage facilities, to ensure the proper handling and preservation of perishable products.
“Our operations reinforce Medellín’s position as one of the region’s leading flower export hubs, bringing Colombian flowers closer to key consumer markets across the Americas and Europe. As Latin America’s leading cargo airline, we continue to put our capacity, connectivity and expertise at the service of an industry that represents the very best of our country,” said Diogo Elias, CEO of Avianca Cargo.
