Challenge Group Temporarily Suspends Freighter Operations at Navi Mumbai

Challenge Group has temporarily paused its freighter services at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), citing current operating conditions that do not provide the level of consistency required for its international cargo network and customers. The company is now reviewing alternative arrangements to maintain its India connectivity and expects to announce its next service solution shortly.

The decision comes as NMIA takes on a growing role in Mumbai’s air cargo landscape following the relocation of freighter activity from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). While the new airport has emerged as an important alternative gateway, the transition has highlighted the need for dependable cargo-handling processes, customs coordination, warehouse capacity, road access and efficient cargo transfers.

Challenge Group said its decision does not change its long-term commitment to the Mumbai market. The operator intends to return to NMIA once the operating environment meets the requirements needed to support dependable freighter services.

The group’s integrated cargo business spans airfreight, handling, logistics and maintenance, with specialised solutions for pharmaceuticals, perishables, valuable goods and oversized shipments. Mumbai remains an important market within this network, supported by the group’s local commercial presence and established customer base.

NMIA’s development is particularly significant as Mumbai remains one of India’s major international cargo centres. Its ability to attract sustained freighter capacity will depend not only on airport infrastructure but also on the wider logistics ecosystem, including trucking, customs, cargo release and connections with key industrial and commercial centres.

Challenge Group has continued to strengthen its presence in India, including the expansion of its Delhi services in 2024. The carrier has identified pharmaceuticals, automotive products, textiles and other specialised cargo segments as important components of its Indian business.

The temporary suspension therefore represents an operational adjustment rather than a withdrawal from the Mumbai market. Challenge Group will continue to assess options for maintaining reliable India–international connectivity while NMIA’s cargo operations and supporting infrastructure mature.
